Begin in Addis Ababa before travelling to ancient Aksum and the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. Continue to Gondar, where the main focus of the journey is the spectacular Ketera and Timkat celebrations around Fasilides’ Bath.

Timkat is one of the most important festivals of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. In Gondar, ceremonial processions carry sacred Tabots from churches towards the celebration area on Ketera, followed the next morning by prayers, the blessing of water and the return processions.

After the festival, continue to Bahir Dar for a boat excursion on Lake Tana before returning to Addis Ababa.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Addis Ababa & City Tour

Arrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport.

Meet your representative and transfer to your hotel.

Depending on arrival time, begin exploring Ethiopia’s capital.

Possible visits include the National Museum, Holy Trinity Cathedral and Entoto, with panoramic views over Addis Ababa.

Overnight: Addis Ababa

Day 2 – Addis Ababa → Aksum

Fly to Aksum.

After hotel check-in, begin exploring one of Ethiopia’s most important ancient cities.

Visit the Northern Stelae Field and learn about the monumental obelisks associated with the Aksumite civilization.

Continue to selected archaeological attractions, ancient tombs and the Church of St. Mary of Zion area.

Day 3 – Aksum → Lalibela & Rock-Hewn Churches

Fly from Aksum to Lalibela according to the available domestic schedule.

Begin exploring the famous rock-hewn churches.

Visit selected churches from the main complexes and learn about their architecture, symbolism and continuing religious use.

Highlights include the distinctive cross-shaped Bete Giyorgis.

Day 4 – Lalibela Surroundings: Asheton Maryam or Yemrehanna Kristos

Spend the day exploring beyond the central Lalibela church complex.

Option one is an excursion towards Asheton Maryam, involving a mountain hike or locally available mule assistance.

Alternatively, drive towards Yemrehanna Kristos, an important church constructed inside a large cave.

The final choice can be adapted according to your interests and physical ability.

Return to Lalibela.

Day 5 – Lalibela → Gondar | Imperial City Tour

Travel to Gondar according to the available flight and transfer arrangements.

After arrival, explore the historic imperial city.

Visit the Fasil Ghebbi Royal Enclosure, including castles associated with Emperor Fasilides and later Gondarine rulers.

Continue to Debre Birhan Selassie Church and Fasilides’ Bath.

Day 6 – Ketera – Timkat Eve in Gondar

Today experience Ketera, the eve of Timkat.

Sacred Tabots representing the Ark of the Covenant are ceremonially carried from churches in colourful processions accompanied by clergy, worshippers, chanting and religious music.

Follow selected processions with your guide as they move towards the celebration area.

The atmosphere becomes increasingly festive as thousands of participants gather.

Day 7 – Timkat / Ethiopian Epiphany Celebration

Wake very early for the main Timkat celebration.

Attend prayers and ceremonies around the sacred water.

After the blessing of the water, worshippers traditionally renew the symbolism of baptism and celebrations continue.

Later, the Tabots begin ceremonial processions back towards their respective churches.

The combination of white-clothed worshippers, priests, umbrellas, chanting and historic Gondar creates one of Ethiopia’s most memorable festival experiences.

Spend the remainder of the day experiencing the city.

Day 8 – Gondar → Bahir Dar → Lake Tana

After breakfast, drive through the Amhara highlands towards Bahir Dar.

After arrival and hotel check-in, take a boat trip on Lake Tana.

Visit selected island or peninsula monasteries according to time and accessibility.

Return to Bahir Dar.

Overnight: Bahir Dar

Day 9 – Bahir Dar → Addis Ababa → Departure

Transfer to Bahir Dar Airport for your flight to Addis Ababa.
