Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Addis Ababa

Arrival and airport transfer.

Depending on arrival time, enjoy an Addis Ababa city tour or relax at your hotel.

Overnight: Addis Ababa

Day 2 – Addis Ababa → Kombolcha

Depart Addis Ababa and travel north through the Ethiopian highlands.

Depending on your travel date and market schedule, a regional market visit may be incorporated where practical.

Continue to Kombolcha.

Overnight: Kombolcha

Day 3 – Kombolcha → Lalibela

Continue through dramatic northern Ethiopian mountain landscapes towards Lalibela.

The journey provides excellent views across deep valleys, highland farms and mountain settlements.

Arrive in Lalibela and settle into your hotel.

Overnight: Lalibela

Day 4 – Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches

Spend the day exploring the famous rock-hewn churches of Lalibela.

Visit the principal church groups, interconnected trenches and passages while learning about the history, architecture and religious traditions of the site.

The churches remain active places of worship.

Day 5 – Asheton Maryam Excursion

Travel into the mountains overlooking Lalibela for an excursion towards Asheton Maryam.

Depending on your preference, parts of the excursion can be completed on foot or with locally available mule assistance.

Enjoy beautiful views over the surrounding highlands.

Return to Lalibela later in the day.

Overnight: Lalibela

Day 6 – Lalibela → Mekele

Continue north towards Mekele according to the current accessible road route.

Arrive in Mekele and explore selected historical or cultural attractions depending on available time and opening conditions.

Overnight: Mekele

Day 7 – Mekele → Northern Tigray → Aksum

Travel through northern Ethiopia towards Aksum.

Where current accessibility and local regulations permit, historical attractions such as Yeha or selected ancient religious sites may be incorporated.

Because some northern Tigray sites can require special routing or access arrangements, the exact stops should be confirmed before departure.

Continue to Aksum.

Overnight: Aksum

Day 8 – Full-Day Aksum Tour

Explore Aksum’s archaeological and religious heritage.

Visit the Northern Stelae Field, historical remains, ancient tombs where accessible and the Church of St. Mary of Zion area.

Learn about the Aksumite Kingdom and the city’s importance in Ethiopian history.

Overnight: Aksum

Day 9 – Aksum → Simien Mountains

Leave Aksum and travel towards the Simien Mountains.

The drive passes through spectacular northern Ethiopian highlands.

Enter the Simien region and enjoy short walks and selected viewpoints depending on arrival time.

Look for geladas and enjoy views across the dramatic escarpment.

Day 10 – Simien Mountains → Gondar

Enjoy additional mountain views or a short morning walk before travelling towards Gondar.

Arrive in the historic imperial city and check into your hotel.

Day 11 – Full-Day Gondar Historical Tour

Explore Gondar’s major historical attractions.

Visit the Fasil Ghebbi Royal Enclosure and castles associated with Emperor Fasilides and later Gondarine rulers.

Continue to Debre Birhan Selassie Church and Fasilides’ Bath where time permits.

Overnight: Gondar

Day 12 – Gondar → Bahir Dar → Lake Tana

Drive from Gondar to Bahir Dar.

After arrival, take a boat excursion on Lake Tana.

Visit selected historic island or peninsula monasteries according to access and available time.

Day 13 – Blue Nile Falls & Bahir Dar

Drive to the Blue Nile Falls.

Walk to suitable viewpoints and enjoy the surrounding countryside.

Day 14 – Bahir Dar → Addis Ababa

Begin the long return journey to Addis Ababa.

Alternatively, this section may be replaced with a domestic flight if requested and available.
