Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 – Semera → Afar Lowlands → Hamed Ela Area
Meet your expedition team in Semera.
Travel north through the Afar Depression towards the salt and geothermal landscapes of the northern Danakil region.
Experience the transition from the relatively developed Semera area into remote desert environments.
Overnight: Basic camp or locally available accommodation
Day 2 – Dallol, Salt Flats & Desert Landscapes
Explore accessible attractions around the Dallol region.
Depending on current conditions and permissions, visits may include:
- salt flats
- geothermal formations
- salt-working areas
- unusual mineral landscapes
- desert viewpoints
Learn about Afar life and the long history of salt extraction in the region.
Overnight: Afar region
Day 3 – Drive to Erta Ale → Volcano Trek
Travel through remote volcanic terrain towards the Erta Ale trekking base.
Begin hiking later in the afternoon or evening when temperatures are generally lower.
Reach the overnight area near Erta Ale.
Observe the volcanic landscape from currently permitted locations.
Volcanic activity changes frequently, so visible lava cannot be guaranteed.
Overnight: Basic camp
Day 4 – Erta Ale → Descend → Semera
Wake early for additional views where conditions permit.
Descend to the vehicle and begin the journey back to Semera.
Tour ends in Semera.
