Begin with the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela before continuing towards Tigray and the dramatic Gheralta region. Explore selected rock-hewn churches before descending into the Afar Depression for volcanic and desert landscapes around Dallol, Lake Afrera and Erta Ale.

The final section explores Afar culture and Awash National Park before returning to Addis Ababa.

This is an expedition-style itinerary involving long road journeys, remote areas, extreme heat, basic camping and changing access conditions.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Addis Ababa

Airport pickup and hotel transfer.

Depending on arrival time, enjoy a city tour or relax after your flight.

Overnight: Addis Ababa

Day 2 – Addis Ababa → Kombolcha

Drive north through Ethiopia’s highland landscapes towards Kombolcha.

Make suitable sightseeing and photography stops.

Overnight: Kombolcha

Day 3 – Kombolcha → Lalibela

Continue through the northern Ethiopian mountains towards Lalibela.

Arrive and check into your accommodation.

Overnight: Lalibela

Day 4 – Full-Day Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches

Explore Lalibela’s remarkable rock-hewn churches.

Visit the principal church groups and learn about their architecture, history and living religious traditions.

Overnight: Lalibela

Day 5 – Lalibela → Mekele Region

Travel north towards the Mekele area according to the confirmed accessible road route.

The journey provides impressive views across northern Ethiopia.

Overnight: Mekele or suitable en-route accommodation

Day 6 – Mekele → Afar / Dallol Region

Begin the descent towards the Afar Depression.

Travel into increasingly arid landscapes.

Depending on current official access, conditions and routing, continue towards the Dallol/Hamed Ela area or an alternative approved base.

Overnight: Basic camp or locally available accommodation

Day 7 – Dallol & Salt Landscapes

Explore accessible parts of the Dallol region.

The landscape is shaped by salt, geothermal processes and intense desert conditions.

Possible attractions depend heavily on current access and may include salt formations, geothermal areas and salt-working landscapes.

Return to camp.

Day 8 – Afar Region → Tigray / Gheralta

Travel back towards the highlands and continue towards the Gheralta region according to current routing.

The transition from the Afar lowlands to Tigray’s sandstone mountains is one of the most dramatic changes in scenery on the journey.

Overnight: Hawzen/Gheralta area

Day 9 – Gheralta & Tigray Rock Churches

Explore selected rock-hewn churches of Tigray.

The day’s route should be chosen according to your fitness level and current church access.

Some churches require easy walks, while others involve steep hiking or exposed approaches.

Overnight: Hawzen/Gheralta area

Day 10 – Tigray → Kombolcha / Southbound Transit

Begin travelling south according to the most practical current route.

Stop at suitable historical and scenic locations along the journey.

Overnight: Kombolcha area or suitable en-route town

Day 11 – Kombolcha → Bati → Mile

Travel towards the edge of the Afar region.

Where timing and market schedules coincide, Bati may provide an interesting cultural stop.

Continue towards Mile.

Overnight: Mile area

Day 12 – Mile → Semera

Continue into the Afar region towards Semera, one of the main logistical centres for northeastern Ethiopia.

Use the day to prepare for the more remote expedition section.

Overnight: Semera

Day 13 – Semera → Lake Afrera

Travel through arid Afar landscapes towards Lake Afrera.

Arrive at the saline lake and explore the surrounding volcanic terrain.

Overnight: Lake Afrera area

Day 14 – Lake Afrera Exploration

Spend a more relaxed day around Lake Afrera.

Where accessible, visit salt-working areas, hot springs and viewpoints around the lake.

Prepare for the Erta Ale expedition.

Overnight: Lake Afrera area

Day 15 – Lake Afrera → Erta Ale Base → Volcano Trek

Continue through remote volcanic landscapes towards the Erta Ale trekking base.

Begin the trek later in the day when temperatures are generally lower.

Camp in the Erta Ale area.

Actual volcanic activity and permitted viewing locations cannot be guaranteed.

Overnight: Basic volcano camp

Day 16 – Erta Ale → Descend → Lake Afrera Area

Wake early for additional views around the volcanic area where conditions permit.

Descend and meet the vehicles.

Return towards Lake Afrera or another approved overnight location according to current routing.

Overnight: Afar region

Day 17 – Afar Region → Semera

Return towards Semera.

Arrive and rest after the expedition section.

Depending on timing, enjoy a short city exploration.

Overnight: Semera

Day 18 – Semera → Afar Cultural Experience → Awash

Travel southwest through the Afar region.

Where arranged respectfully and locally approved, visit Afar communities and learn about life in the dry lowlands.

Continue towards Awash.

Overnight: Awash area

Day 19 – Awash National Park

Spend the day exploring Awash National Park.

Take wildlife drives through dry savannah and acacia landscapes.

Possible wildlife includes Beisa oryx, gazelles, warthogs, baboons and many bird species.

Visit Awash Falls where time and conditions allow.

Overnight: Awash area

Day 20 – Awash → Addis Ababa

Return to Addis Ababa.

Depending on arrival time, enjoy additional sightseeing or shopping.

Overnight: Addis Ababa

Day 21 – Addis Ababa & Departure

Enjoy free time or a final city visit depending on your international flight schedule.

Transfer to Bole International Airport.

Dallol

Access to Dallol and surrounding sites should be confirmed immediately before the tour.

The itinerary may need to be modified if local conditions make the planned route unavailable.

Tigray Churches
