Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Addis Ababa → Aksum

Fly from Addis Ababa to Aksum according to the available domestic schedule.

Meet your guide and begin exploring the historic city.

Visit the Northern Stelae Field and selected archaeological and religious attractions.

Overnight: Aksum

Day 2 – Aksum → Yeha → Northern Tigray → Adigrat

Leave Aksum and travel east through the northern Tigray highlands.

Visit Yeha, one of Ethiopia’s most important ancient archaeological centres.

Continue towards Adigrat.

Depending on current accessibility and official/local arrangements, additional historical or religious sites may be included along the route.

Overnight: Adigrat

Day 3 – Adigrat → Negash → Hawzen & Eastern Tigray Churches

Travel towards Hawzen through eastern Tigray.

Visit selected rock-hewn or historic churches according to current accessibility, walking ability and local opening arrangements.

The region contains monolithic, semi-monolithic and rock-cut churches representing different architectural traditions.

Where routing permits, stop around Negash and other significant historical locations.

Arrive around Hawzen.

Overnight: Hawzen

Day 4 – Gheralta Mountains & Rock-Hewn Churches

Spend the day exploring the Gheralta Mountains, one of the most spectacular landscapes in northern Ethiopia.

Visit selected churches according to your fitness and preferred level of hiking.

Possible routes may include churches associated with the Gheralta sandstone mountains, but exact selections should be confirmed locally because hiking difficulty and access vary considerably.

Some churches require steep approaches and exposed sections and are not suitable for every traveller.

Enjoy panoramic views across the Tigray plains before returning to Hawzen or continuing towards Mekele.

Overnight: Hawzen or Mekele

Day 5 – Wukro Area Churches → Mekele → Departure

Continue to Mekele.
