8 Days Southern Ethiopia Tour | Arba Minch, Konso, Mursi & Hamar

Day 1 – Addis Ababa → Arba Minch

Fly from Addis Ababa to Arba Minch, or begin the tour according to your agreed transportation arrangement.

Arba Minch sits in one of southern Ethiopia’s most attractive settings, surrounded by mountains and overlooking the Rift Valley lakes of Abaya and Chamo.

After airport pickup and hotel check-in, enjoy a relaxed introduction to the area.

Depending on arrival time, visit a viewpoint overlooking the lakes and the forested landscapes surrounding Arba Minch.

Day 2 – Dorze Village & Lake Chamo Boat Trip

After breakfast, drive into the highlands above Arba Minch to visit a Dorze community.

The Dorze are well known for their traditional weaving skills and distinctive tall houses. During the visit, learn about local architecture, farming, food preparation and everyday highland life.

Return to Arba Minch and later take a boat trip on Lake Chamo.

The lake is known for Nile crocodiles, hippos and numerous waterbirds. Wildlife sightings vary, but the boat excursion is one of southern Ethiopia’s classic natural experiences.

Return to Arba Minch for the evening.

Day 3 – Arba Minch → Konso

After breakfast, drive south towards Konso.

The surrounding highlands have been shaped by generations of terraced agriculture, dry-stone walls and fortified settlements.

Visit a traditional Konso settlement with a local guide and learn about the community’s agricultural systems, village organization and cultural traditions.

The Konso Cultural Landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and represents an extraordinary example of human adaptation to a dry and challenging environment. Its stone terraces remain actively used for agriculture.

Depending on time, visit additional viewpoints or cultural attractions around Konso.

Day 4 – Konso → Turmi | Enter the Lower Omo Valley

Leave the Konso highlands and continue into the warmer and increasingly remote landscapes of the Lower Omo Valley.

The changing scenery is part of today’s experience as agricultural highlands gradually give way to drier savannah.

Depending on the route and travel date, there may be opportunities to stop at local communities or markets.

Arrive in Turmi, the main centre of Hamar country.

Later, visit a Hamar community and learn about local homes, cattle culture, decorative traditions and daily life.

Day 5 – Turmi → Omorate → Dassanech → Turmi

Travel south towards Omorate and the lower Omo River.

After completing local arrangements, cross the river and visit a Dassanech village.

Your guide will introduce aspects of Dassanech culture, traditional homes and everyday life in this dry lowland region.

Return to Turmi after the visit.

If your travel dates happen to coincide with a traditional Hamar event or local market, your guide may adjust the timing of the day’s itinerary where practical.

Day 6 – Turmi → Karo Village → Jinka

Today visit one of the best-known Karo settlements along the Omo River.

The Karo are known for decorative body painting and their close relationship with the river environment.

The elevated river views provide excellent opportunities for landscape photography.

After your cultural visit, travel towards Jinka, passing through varied landscapes and settlements of South Omo.

Arrive in Jinka in the late afternoon.

Day 7 – Jinka → Mago National Park → Mursi Village → Jinka

Depart early for Mago National Park.

Drive through the park towards a Mursi community.

The visit provides an opportunity to learn about Mursi society and cultural traditions with the assistance of local guides.

Interactions should be approached respectfully, particularly regarding photography. Your guide will explain local expectations before the visit.

Return to Jinka in the afternoon.

If time permits, visit the South Omo Research Centre and Museum or a nearby Ari community.

Overnight: Jinka

Day 8 – Jinka → Addis Ababa

After breakfast, transfer to Jinka Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa.

Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel or continue according to your onward itinerary.

Your 8-day Southern Ethiopia and Omo Valley tour ends in Addis Ababa.
