This short but rewarding walking holiday takes you through Sankaber, Jinbar Waterfall, Geech and Imet Gogo, combining dramatic escarpment landscapes, high-altitude camping and encounters with endemic wildlife.

It is longer and more immersive than our 3-day introductory trek, while remaining suitable for travellers who do not have time for the extended Chenek, Bwahit or Ras Dejen trekking routes.

With elevations approaching 4,000 metres at Imet Gogo, this four-day package provides a genuine highland trekking experience in one of Africa’s most dramatic mountain regions.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Gondar → Debark → Sankaber

Meet your guide at your Gondar hotel or Gondar Airport.

Drive north towards Debark and continue into Simien Mountains National Park.

Begin an introductory two-hour hike before reaching Sankaber.

Enjoy outstanding views over the northern escarpment.

The Sankaber grasslands are also one of the classic places to encounter troops of endemic geladas.

Trekking: Approximately 2 hours

Overnight: Sankaber Camp

Elevation: Approx. 3,250 m

Day 2 – Sankaber → Jinbar Waterfall → Geech

Begin your first full trekking day.

Follow the highland trail through open grasslands and heather vegetation.

The route provides excellent views along the escarpment before reaching a viewpoint overlooking Jinbar Waterfall.

Descend towards the Jinbar River and then climb towards Geech.

The area around Geech is characterized by mountain grassland and impressive giant lobelias.

Where practical and locally arranged, a cultural stop may be incorporated around the Geech area.

Distance: Around 10 km

Overnight: Geech Camp

Elevation: Approx. 3,600 m

Day 3 – Imet Gogo, Saha & Kedadit Hiking Circuit

Today explore several of the greatest viewpoints in the Simien Mountains.

Hike from Geech towards Imet Gogo, approximately 3,926 metres above sea level.

The viewpoint projects out above enormous valleys and provides exceptional views across the eroded peaks and cliffs of the Simien Mountains.

Continue towards Saha and Kedadit.

The circular hiking route also offers excellent opportunities to observe geladas, raptors and high-altitude vegetation.

Return to Geech in the afternoon.

Trekking: Approximately 5–6 hours

Overnight: Geech Camp

Highest point: Approx. 3,926 m

Day 4 – Geech → Ambaras → Debark → Gondar

After breakfast, enjoy a final hike through the highland landscapes towards the road around Ambaras.

Meet the vehicle and drive back through Debark to Gondar.

Tour ends at your hotel or another agreed location in Gondar.

Walia ibex are generally more strongly associated with areas farther east around Chenek, so travellers whose main objective is to see Walia ibex should consider our longer itineraries.
