5 Days Omo Valley Tour – Mursi, Hamar, Karo & Dassanech Tribes

Day 1 – Addis Ababa → Jinka | Gateway to the Omo Valley

Take a domestic flight from Addis Ababa to Jinka, one of the main gateways to the Omo Valley.

Upon arrival, meet your Ras Dejen Ethiopia Trekking guide and transfer to your hotel.

Depending on your arrival time, explore Jinka and its surroundings. A visit to the South Omo Research Centre and Museum can provide useful background on the cultures, traditions and history of the communities you will encounter during the journey.

If time allows, visit a nearby Ari community to experience rural life, farming practices and traditional homes.

The first day is deliberately relaxed, allowing you to prepare for the more remote sections of the Omo Valley.

Overnight: Jinka

Day 2 – Jinka → Mago National Park → Mursi Village → Turmi

After an early breakfast, drive through the landscapes of Mago National Park towards a Mursi community.

The Mursi are among the best-known communities of the Lower Omo Valley and have maintained distinctive cultural traditions despite increasing contact with the outside world.

Your guide will help facilitate the visit and explain local customs, social traditions and appropriate behaviour during photography and interaction.

After the visit, return towards Jinka and continue south through the changing landscapes of the Omo Valley towards Turmi, the main base for exploring Hamar country.

Depending on routing and local conditions, stops can be made along the way for landscape photography and village encounters.

Arrive in Turmi in the late afternoon.

Day 3 – Turmi → Omorate → Dassanech Village → Turmi

Today travel south from Turmi towards Omorate, close to Ethiopia’s border with Kenya.

The journey passes through increasingly dry landscapes before reaching the lower reaches of the Omo River.

Cross the river by locally available transport and visit a Dassanech community.

The Dassanech live in the arid region around the lower Omo and Lake Turkana area. Your local guide will explain aspects of their livelihoods, traditional homes and adaptation to one of southern Ethiopia’s harshest environments.

After the visit, return to Turmi.

Later in the afternoon, visit a Hamar community around Turmi. The Hamar are known for their distinctive hairstyles, decorative traditions and pastoral lifestyle.

If a traditional ceremony is taking place during your visit and attendance is locally permitted, it may be possible to arrange a visit. Such events are community occasions and cannot be guaranteed in advance.

Day 4 – Turmi → Karo Village → Jinka

After breakfast, drive towards the Omo River to visit a Karo community.

The Karo live in settlements overlooking the Omo River and are known for elaborate body painting and decorative traditions. The setting itself is one of the highlights, with panoramic views across the river and surrounding valley.

Spend time learning about local life and the relationship between the community and the Omo River.

Afterwards, continue back towards Jinka.

Depending on your travel date and route, your guide may incorporate a local market or additional community stop along the way.

Arrive in Jinka and spend your final evening in southern Ethiopia.

Day 5 – Jinka → Addis Ababa

After breakfast, transfer to Jinka Airport for your return flight to Addis Ababa.

Depending on the flight schedule, there may be time for a short visit around Jinka before departure.

Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, transfer arrangements can be organized according to your onward travel plans.
