Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Addis Ababa
Arrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport and meet your guide.
Transfer to your hotel.
Depending on arrival time, take a city tour visiting selected attractions or relax after your international flight.
Your guide will also provide information about the coming journey into northeastern Ethiopia.
Overnight: Addis Ababa
Day 2 – Addis Ababa → Kombolcha
After breakfast, leave Addis Ababa and travel north through Ethiopia’s highland landscapes towards Kombolcha.
The drive passes through changing mountain scenery, towns and agricultural areas.
Make suitable stops for refreshments and photography along the route.
Arrive in Kombolcha in the afternoon or evening.
Overnight: Kombolcha
Day 3 – Kombolcha → Afar Region → Dodom Area
Continue east and northeast towards the Afar region.
As you descend from the Ethiopian highlands, the landscape becomes progressively hotter, drier and more dramatic.
Travel towards the Dodom area, traditionally used as an access point for journeys towards Erta Ale.
The exact route and overnight arrangements may vary according to current road and access conditions.
Overnight: Dodom or nearby camp
Day 4 – Dodom Area → Lake Afrera
Travel through the remote Afar landscape towards Lake Afrera.
Lake Afrera is a saline lake located below sea level and surrounded by volcanic and desert landscapes.
Spend time around the lake and, where conditions permit, experience the unusual scenery and nearby hot spring areas.
The combination of dark volcanic terrain, water and arid mountains makes Lake Afrera one of the most distinctive landscapes on the route.
Overnight: Lake Afrera area
Day 5 – Lake Afrera → Erta Ale Base → Trek Towards Erta Ale
After breakfast, continue towards the Erta Ale region.
The route crosses remote volcanic terrain and desert landscapes.
On arrival at the trekking base, the support team prepares equipment, food and water for the trek.
The walk normally begins later in the day when temperatures become more manageable.
Trek towards the Erta Ale summit area accompanied by your local guides and support team.
Pack animals may be used to transport water, food and camping equipment where available and appropriate.
Arrive at the overnight area and experience the extraordinary volcanic surroundings.
Overnight: Basic camp in the Erta Ale area
Day 6 – Erta Ale → Descend → Dodom Area
Wake early to experience the volcanic landscape around Erta Ale.
Conditions around an active volcano change frequently, so the exact viewing locations and volcanic activity visible during your trip cannot be guaranteed.
After breakfast, begin the descent towards the trekking base.
Meet the vehicles and continue towards the Dodom area.
Spend the night in the remote Afar landscape.
Overnight: Dodom or nearby area
Day 7 – Dodom → Kombolcha
After breakfast, begin the return journey towards the Ethiopian highlands.
Travel from the hot Afar lowlands towards Kombolcha, observing the dramatic change in landscape and climate as elevation increases.
Arrive in Kombolcha in the afternoon or evening.
Overnight: Kombolcha
Day 8 – Kombolcha → Addis Ababa
Leave Kombolcha after breakfast and drive back to Addis Ababa.
Make suitable stops along the journey.
Arrive in the capital in the afternoon or evening.
Transfer to your hotel or Bole International Airport according to your onward travel arrangements.
